Answers to common questions about financial planning, investments, pensions, estate, mortgages and business advice

  • 1. What is an Independent Financial Adviser?

We offer advice across the full market (not tied to specific products). We evaluate many providers so you get options, not bias.

  • 2. How are you regulated?

McCarthy Wealth is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Our firm reference number is [FRN]. All advice follows FCA rules and Consumer Duty requirements.

  • 3. How do you charge?

  • 4. Do you have a minimum portfolio size?

Yes - we generally begin at £50,000 for full-service clients. If your assets are lower, we may offer modular or advisory-only arrangements to help you grow.

  • 5. What happens at the first meeting?

No commitment. We listen to your goals and gather financial data. If there’s a fit, we propose the next steps (scope, cost, timeline).

  • 6. What’s the difference between “advice” and “execution only”?

Advice includes recommendations tailored to your situation. Execution only is simply carrying out instructions (you choose the investment) without guidance - we rarely offer this in isolation.

  • 7. How often will we “meet” or review?

At least annually, but more often when markets, legislation or life events dictate. Our ongoing service includes proactive reviews and adjustments. The FCA expects firms to deliver the services clients have paid for (e.g. suitability reviews). FCA

  • 8. Can I leave at any time?

Yes, subject to terms in our client agreement. We will help with handover if you move to another adviser.

  • 9. What is your approach to risk?

Risk isn’t just “never lose money” - it’s measured, managed, and understood. We calibrate to your goals, stress test, and help you avoid behavioural mistakes in volatile markets.

  • 10. Why should I choose McCarthy Wealth over a larger firm?

You get the same technical rigor, but a more human, personal experience. Less red tape, more accountability. We invest deeply in fewer clients rather than being “one of thousands.”

“Good advice isn’t a one-off conversation - it’s an ongoing relationship.”
